Celebrate a powerful chapter of Western Australian railway history with the 2025 Steam Giants WA Railways V Class V1220 50c Coloured Uncirculated Coin from the Royal Australian Mint. This impressive release forms part of the Steam Giants – Australian Rail Heritage collection and pays tribute to one of WA’s most iconic steam locomotives.
Constructed in 1955, the WA Railways V Class V1220 locomotive was introduced to help modernise and strengthen the Western Australian Railways network following the Second World War. Designed with future adaptability in mind, the locomotive was large enough to potentially be converted to standard gauge if required.
Despite its impressive engineering, the rapid arrival of diesel locomotives led to the V1220 entering retirement earlier than expected. The locomotive made history by hauling the final Western Australian Government Railways steam service in 1972. Today, it is preserved and displayed at The Railway Museum in Bassendean.
The Steam Giants collection celebrates the locomotives that helped shape Australia’s rail network and industrial history.
