Commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of Australian servicemen during the Second World War with the 2026 1941: Service Amid Strife – Greece & Crete 20c Coloured Uncirculated Coin from the Royal Australian Mint. This moving commemorative release honours the Australians who fought alongside Allied forces during the Greece and Crete campaigns of 1941.
In April 1941, Nazi Germany launched its invasion of Greece, prompting Australian troops from the 6th Division to fight alongside Commonwealth allies in a determined defence against advancing Axis forces. Following the withdrawal from mainland Greece, Allied troops regrouped on the island of Crete.
Despite fierce resistance and extraordinary courage, Allied forces lacked the necessary air support and weaponry required to defend the island successfully. The eventual evacuation from Crete came at a devastating cost, with approximately 1,600 Australians killed or wounded and more than 5,000 taken prisoner during the campaign.
In the decades following the war, the shared experience and sacrifices made during the Greece and Crete campaigns forged a lasting connection between Australians, Greeks, and Cretans. This coloured commemorative coin pays tribute to the courage, resilience, and sacrifice shown during these historic battles.
The 1941: Service Amid Strife – Greece & Crete coin serves as a lasting tribute to the Australians who fought during one of World War II’s most difficult campaigns. Combining historical significance with striking coloured artwork, this release is an excellent addition for collectors of Australian commemorative coins and military memorabilia.
